How to Get Rid of Mold in Your House

Mould is potentially destructive and unwelcome in our homes, possibly ruining furniture, clothing, walls, and other personal belongings. Though some types of mould have beneficial properties, such as the antibiotic penicillin, the mould found in homes can be hazardous to health, leading to respiratory illnesses, allergies, skin irritation and other issues. Take the necessary steps to identify sources of mould buildup and address them quickly to avoid any potential damage.

Black mould is particularly infamous for creating unhealthy environments to live in. You may not even know it’s there, mostly because moulds grow quickly in dark, warm, humid places that are hidden and challenging to clean.

Conditions are perfect for mould to grow in areas like basements, kitchens, and bathrooms, where moisture is common. You have a better chance of preventing mould by cleaning your house regularly, keeping moisture to a minimum, and hiring a professional cleaning service.

5 Ways to Clean Mould

There are many commercial products for removing mould, but their harsh chemicals can be as harmful as the mould. Here are five effective, non-toxic ways of removing mould.

The Lemon Treatment: Lemons are an amazing substance. They lend a refreshing and uplifting scent and are also natural deodorizers, antiseptics, bleaches, stain removers, and cleaners. Perhaps most importantly, lemons can help remove black mould due to their high concentration of acid, which is effective at breaking down mould and disinfecting surfaces.

Removal with Essential Oils: Tea tree oil, derived from the leaves of the Melaleuca Alternifolia tree, which is native to Australia, has a multitude of applications, ranging from insect repellant to antiseptic and deodorizer. Because of its bacteria-fighting properties, it can also be used safely to get rid of black mould in your home. It breaks down the cell wall of mould spores and drastically reduces their growth rate.

Using Baking Soda: Baking soda doesn’t just absorb odours; it has multiple uses, including removing black mould and other types of hazardous moulds. It also absorbs the moisture that attracts mould. You can spray the mouldy area with a mixture of one-quarter of a tablespoon of baking soda in a water-filled spray bottle. Use a scrub brush to loosen and remove any remaining mould particles.

Cleaning up With Vinegar: White vinegar deodorizes, cleans, and disinfects surfaces. It is also effective at killing 82% of all mould species, including black mould. This mildly acidic solution is safe to use on most surfaces. Spray some vinegar onto the affected area, let it sit for several minutes, then wipe it away with a damp cloth or sponge.

The Hydrogen Peroxide Solution: Hydrogen peroxide is a widely available and highly effective antifungal, antiviral, and anti-bacterial solution commonly found in most households. It is a powerful oxidizing agent used for many years as a disinfectant and sanitizer. When applied to the mould, it can help eliminate spores’ growth and prevent the spread of harmful microorganisms.
